Health And Safety Policy

Kennington Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy

Kennington Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing professional cleaning services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, visitors, contractors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning in homes, offices and commercial premises.

Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. We will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice at all times.

Management Responsibilities

The management team at Kennington Carpet Cleaning has overall responsibility for ensuring this Health and Safety Policy is implemented, communicated and regularly reviewed. Management will provide sufficient resources, information, instruction, supervision and training to maintain safe systems of work.

Managers will ensure that risk assessments are carried out for all significant tasks, that suitable equipment and personal protective equipment are provided, and that staff follow safe working procedures. We will monitor performance, investigate incidents and take corrective action where necessary to continually improve our safety standards.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees, whether full-time, part-time or temporary, share a responsibility for their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions during cleaning activities. Staff must cooperate with management on all health and safety matters and follow training, instructions and company procedures at all times.

Employees must use equipment and personal protective equipment correctly, report defects or concerns immediately, and not interfere with or misuse anything provided for health and safety purposes. Any accidents, near misses or hazardous situations encountered while working at client properties must be reported promptly so that appropriate measures can be taken.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Kennington Carpet Cleaning will carry out and maintain written risk assessments for key tasks including carpet and upholstery cleaning, hard floor cleaning, use of portable electrical equipment, chemical handling and manual handling. These assessments identify significant hazards and specify the control measures required to reduce risks to an acceptable level.

Safe working practices will be developed from these assessments and communicated to all relevant staff. These may include using the correct tools and attachments for each cleaning task, setting up safe work areas with warning signs where required, and ensuring adequate ventilation when using cleaning solutions.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

Our services involve the use of cleaning chemicals, detergents and spotting agents. We will select products that are effective yet as safe and environmentally responsible as reasonably practicable. All hazardous substances will be assessed under relevant regulations and used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and safety data sheets.

Staff will receive training in safe handling, dilution, application and storage of chemicals. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks or eye protection will be provided where required. Chemicals will be kept in clearly labelled containers and secured when not in use, especially in customer premises where children, pets or vulnerable persons may be present.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Carpet cleaning work often involves lifting and moving portable machines, hoses, tools and containers. To reduce the risk of strains and musculoskeletal injuries, employees will be trained in safe manual handling techniques and encouraged to use mechanical aids or team lifting whenever possible.

All machinery, including carpet cleaning extractors, vacuum cleaners, rotary machines and other portable electrical equipment, will be maintained in a safe condition, inspected regularly and taken out of service if any defects are found. Staff will only operate equipment for which they have been trained and authorised.

Electrical Safety

Electrical safety is critical when using powered cleaning equipment in customer locations. Our team will visually inspect cables, plugs and sockets before use, avoid overloading circuits, and position cables to minimise trip risks. Damaged or faulty equipment will not be used and will be reported to management immediately.

Where possible, residual current devices will be used to provide additional protection when operating electrical equipment, particularly in areas where moisture may be present. Equipment will be switched off and unplugged when not in use.

Slips, Trips and Falls

Cleaning processes can create wet or damp floors, as well as hoses and tools running across walkways. To minimise slip and trip risks, our staff will use appropriate warning signs, communicate with occupants about temporary hazards and ensure that work areas are kept as tidy as reasonably possible.

Where access equipment, such as small steps, is required, it will be used safely, placed on stable surfaces and inspected regularly. We will avoid working at height wherever alternatives are available.

Protection of Customers and the Public

The safety of customers, their families, pets, employees and visitors is central to how we work. Our technicians will plan each job to minimise disruption and risk in and around the property. Hazards such as trailing cables, wet floors and open containers will be controlled, and safe access routes will be maintained.

We will consider any special needs or vulnerabilities of individuals present at the premises and adjust our methods where necessary, for example by using lower odour products or scheduling work to avoid busy periods in commercial environments.

Training, Information and Supervision

Kennington Carpet Cleaning will provide health and safety training for all employees appropriate to their role, including induction training for new starters and ongoing refresher training where required. This includes training in risk awareness, safe use of equipment, chemical safety, manual handling and emergency arrangements.

Supervisors will monitor working practices, provide guidance and correct unsafe behaviour. Health and safety information will be communicated through briefings, instructions and documented procedures so that all staff understand their responsibilities.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences involving our employees or arising from our work at customer locations must be reported to management without delay. We will record incidents, investigate causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

Staff will be briefed on what to do in emergencies, such as fire, serious injury, chemical exposure or electrical incidents. Where incidents occur on client premises, we will cooperate fully with their emergency procedures and designated responsible persons.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry guidance, our operations or the results of incident investigations and audits. We will seek feedback from staff and customers on any safety concerns and use this information to improve our systems.

By working together and maintaining high safety standards, Kennington Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver reliable, high quality cleaning services while safeguarding the wellbeing of everyone affected by our work.
